Is Christmas Caroling Outdated?

Ava

During Christmas season, caroling is a tradition widely known across America.  Beginning in the 13th century, it was a practice used to wish luck to others as risky wintertime began. It morphed into a fun festivity to spread the joy of Christmas. However, this activity is a rare find during present time. Privacy is a big thing nowadays, and it’s not the most endearing thing to show up on someone’s doorstep singing, especially if they don’t want you there. Furthermore, the cold of wintertime and the introduction of new ways to spread Christmas joy have furthered the shift away from caroling. On the other hand, it’s a heartwarming tradition that could spread happiness to those who need it. Consequently, it is still practiced in certain areas, especially in smaller towns like our very own Springville, Alabama. (See the picture of some of SHS’s recent classroom carolers). Overall, the deciding factor solely relies not on the caroler, but the reaction of the people whose house you pop up at; a happy reaction affirms that caroling is still alive and beneficial to Christmas spirit, while a door slam in your face suggests it might be better to leave said tradition behind.
