1963- Sidney L. Poitier was the first African American actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor for Lilies of the Field.

1970- Two days after launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a warning light, a loud bang, and the message “Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” puts an end to Apollo 13’s mission to the moon. An exploded oxygen tank on the spacecraft makes returning to Earth alive the new goal.

1997-  The golf phenom Tiger Woods wins the Masters Tournament in 270 strokes, beating longstanding records set by Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd. With mixed African, Asian, Caucasian, and Native American ancestry, he’s the first person of color to claim the green jacket, as well as the youngest.

2000- Metallica files a lawsuit against Napster, a peer-to-peer file-sharing company, after discovering their entire discography was being downloaded for free by Napster users. Later, the company removed the band’s music from their service and banned more than 300,000 users that shared Metallica songs.
